Being selected by Surfline to be part of an article about pregnant women who surf was a great honor for me. I was lucky to be able to surf every day during my pregnancy, finding solace and calmness through ocean therapy.

Discovering my pregnancy was a source of fear for me. Considering my history of infertility following a soccer accident during college, this news came as a surprise. Moreover, the absence of a mother figure throughout my life continues to weigh heavily on me.

Constantly, a fearful voice kept telling me, "You don't understand what a mother does or is, you will never be good enough." I seriously considered this and truly believed it could be completely accurate. During this time, the COVID pandemic emerged. I lost the jobs I relied on to pay my bills after becoming pregnant, and the world was in chaos. Fortunately, my entire life felt like a reflection of the COVID situation, as I was essentially alone on my path and there was always a threat looming that could take advantage of any vulnerability. From a young age, I had to be a superhero to survive, or else I wouldn't have made it.

Without a female figure to offer guidance, I was left uncertain about whom to turn to with my concerns. Although my partner was supportive, we both lacked the knowledge and assistance needed in caring for babies. It felt like navigating through unfamiliar territory, and I even felt inadequate for not fully understanding the role of a mother.

Throughout my life, I have always been independent, relying on my unwavering faith in God. In every challenging moment of poverty, desperation, and fear, I found strength and guidance through my belief. This current situation was no exception. However, I found solace, release, and resilience in surfing. To me, the ocean symbolized a nurturing mother, capable of both beauty and ferocity, embracing all her children.

Therefore, my emotional and physical health, as well as everything in between, were revealed to me through my love for surfing. Vland was like a mother figure to me. Nature has always been like a mother to me. As I strive to provide everything I never had for my children, they will learn to prioritize trust in nature, love, and God above all else.

I want to acknowledge the love of a woman who truly radiated love and made me feel secure enough to turn to her for support not only in motherhood but in womanhood as well. Jen Temma was a guardian angel who lived just down the street from us, and despite being busy with her own three children, she still managed to find time to assist me during the most challenging moments of motherhood. Thank you so deeply.

This article features incredible women who are blazing a trail in surfing while pregnant. I feel privileged to have been included in this piece and want to express my heartfelt thanks to Surfline for highlighting such an important topic.

Love,

Danielle
